This week the The Broke and the Bookish gave us a Father's Day Freebie for Top Ten Tuesday. I decided to do my favorite fathers (or father figures) on the screen. MOST of these shows are based on books. So here you have....in no particular order....My Top Ten Dads in Fiction!
Mr. Bennett
from Pride and Prejudice
Can we just give Mr. Bennett a round of applause? FIVE daughters...a wife whose nerves are well...dramatic to say the least. And yet he maintains a calm and collective manner at all times. What a guy!
Arthur Weasley
from Harry Potter
The Weasley family is one of my FAVORITES of all time! And Arthur, with all his oddities and obsession with muggles...holds the family together. Through the good times and the bad, he is a pillar of strength for the family. (I know the photo is dark, but was the only good one I could find of all the kids)
Captain Crewe
from A Little Princess
Depending on the version you watch will determine the outcome of this story for you. But there is no denying the special bond that exists between the Captain and Sarah. He is a gentle and sweet father and truly believes he is doing the best thing for Sarah when he leaves her at Ms. Minchin's boarding school.
Matthew Cuthbert
from Anne of Green Gables
Puffed sleeves...Need I say more? Matthew and his gentle spirit and generous heart makes him the perfect father figure for Anne. I just adore him.
Captain Von Trapp
from The Sound of Music
Yes, I realise that the Von Trapp family is not fiction...But The Sound of Music is definitely dramatized. SO, I don't feel bad including him. And although he seems hard on the outside, he has a soft center.
Lord Grantham
from Downton Abbey
Here is the one that isn't based on an actual book...But how could I NOT include Lord Grantham? He may not be the "perfect" father, but his heart is in the right spot and he loves his family.
Maurice
from Beauty and the Beast
My favorite Maurie quote..."My daughter...ODD?" A gentle father who will protect his daughter at any cost. I wonder where Belle inherited the selfless heart she has. I ADORE Kevin Kline's portrayal in the new Beauty and the Beast. "How does a moment last forever? How can a story never die? It is love we must hold on to. Never easy, but we try." And even when the whole town thought he was crazy, he never gave up on searching for Belle.
Mr. Banks
from Mary Poppins
Oh man...Here is one for ya! I never truly understood Mr. Banks until I saw "Saving Mr. Banks" OH MY GOODNESS!!! Get ready for the waterworks...I love the transformation that we see throughout Mary Poppins.
Professor Henry Jones Sr.
from Indiana Jones
These two...My childhood would not have been complete without them. Henry and Indiana (or rather, Junior) make a great team...once they put their mind to it.
Bilbo Baggins
from The Hobbit/The Lord of the Rings
Oh Bilbo! What a hobbit...And such a critical role that he played in Frodo's life. I love the bond they share. The adventurer, the story teller, the father figure Frodo needed. *sigh*
