First Line Friday - Together Forever

Thursday, June 28, 2018

Happy Friday!

I may have been purposefully putting off this book...Only because, I LOVE Jody's books SO.MUCH. That I need to savor them...make them last...I even went back and listened to the first book on audio...I can't get over how Jody's books capture my heart, how the characters feel REAL, and how their circumstances speak to me. The way that God is portrayed is so REAL and so TANGIBLE, that often times, I am brought to tears. Jody is without a doubt one of my top 5 favorite authors of all time.

Today’s first line is from...

Author Interview - Jaime Jo Wright

Welcome to Bookworm Mama! I am so honored to have you here today! I have a fresh pitcher of cold brewed coffee for us to sip on today while we visit!
JJW: I’m thrilled to be here! I love visiting!

Where did your love of books/storytelling/reading/writing/etc. come from?

JJW: My love of stories was fostered as a little girl. My Dad was always concocting stories and taking me on adventures! It was ingrained in me and then I started reading when I was four years old, and there was no looking back!

Rachel: This just makes my heart smile! My son just finished Kindergarten and I taught him how to read! I am SO excited for all the adventures he is going to go on!
When did you KNOW that you wanted to be an author?

JJW: I would say my early teens. I dreamed of penning my own book and seeing it in print. I wrote my first novel when I was thirteen . . .huh. I should dig that out and see how bad it was! LOL

Rachel: LOL, You never know, might be a great base for your next story!
What literary character is most like you?

JJW: Ohhhh, that’s a tough one. I know a lot of people probably say this, but my mom used to call me “Anne Shirley”. I’m super stubborn, I talk too much, I have mood swings like nobody’s business, and I live in my imagination. Although I do not have red hair and have never been to PEI Island.

Rachel: Surprisingly no lol! Anne Shirely is my soul sister though! Daydreaming and books...and I have the red hair!

What were your goals and intentions in your book?

JJW: I know it’s not usually expected with mystery novels, but I do intentionally pick a spiritual theme to encapsulate the story. In TRAGP, that theme was grace, and it was also not just about how the Lord shows us grace, but how we show grace to others (or don’t show grace). The critical elements of grace and the health it brings to relationships.

Rachel: Oh man! That is amazing!

Can you share a behind the scenes fact about your book?

JJW: Behind the scenes, I spent quite a bit of time pouring over research my pastor fed me. He’s a natural history buff and he had already uncovered some intriguing historical facts. We met about them, conspired about how they’d fit into a story, and it was so great to get a “pastoral” view of history too--since there are evangelists and theologians in this novel :)

Rachel: How fun!!! I love when I find someone who loves history! I always want to learn more!
Who are some of your favorite authors that you feel were influential in your work? What impact have they had on your writing?

JJW: Oh man. Several authors have been influential. Colleen Coble is the jet fuel to my rocket. She gave me the push I needed to launch and to this day, she’s my back-up when I need to panic, need prayer, or need to text her a success. But, in my formative years, I grew up reading Tracie Peterson. Her words and prose and stories are still etched in my heart. Erica Vetsch has also been an ongoing cheerleader. She is selfless in her encouragement and I am so in awe of her writing and stories. She’s just an amazing mentor!

Rachel: Tracie Peterson is one of the very first authors I ever read as an "adult reader". Tons of credit to her for hooking me on Christian Fiction!
What hidden talents do you have?

JJW: I don’t know that it’s hidden (or that it’s a talent), but I shoot bow and love to bow hunt.

Rachel: Maybe not hidden, but definitely a talent! I haven't shot a bow in YEARS! I don't remmeber being any good at it though.
What books have had a significant impact on your life?

JJW: NANCY DREW! All of them. I devoured every hard copy of Nancy Drew from my library and when the library sold them years later when I was in my late twenties, I bought them all!

Rachel: YEEEEES!!!! I Have read several. Love them all!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?

JJW: Probably that I usually only write in 15 min segments at a time for the most part. Rarely, do I sit down for hours and compose. Sometimes I write on my phone.
Goodreads

Rachel: OH! That is interesting!
What writing advice do you have for pre-published authors?

JJW: Probably that, while studying craft is important, nothing beats writing. Just write. Write because you love it, learn as you can, and never lose that joy of just telling a story.

Rachel: I love, love, LOVE this!!! So good!
Before we go can you tell us about your current WIP?

JJW: My current work is finishing edits on The Curse of Misty Wayfair, which is coming out in early 2019. It’s set in the north woods of Wisconsin, there’s an old asylum, some misguided heroines, and even a one-eyed dog and a stray cat. :)

Rachel: AHHHHH! I haven't even read TRAGP yet and I am already drooling over this next one. Hehe!
Thank you so much for joining us today Jaime, I can not wait to get my hands on your book!
JJW: I am so glad to have spent the time with you here!! Thank you for having me and for your excitement over my stories. I pray they’ll bless you and that you’ll always know, (in the words of Matthew West) Grace Wins!

About the Book
For over a century, the town of Gossamer Grove has thrived on its charm and Midwestern values, but Annalise Forsythe knows painful secrets, including her own, hover just beneath the pleasant facade. When a man is found dead in his run-down trailer home, Annalise inherits the trailer, along with the pictures, vintage obituaries, and old revival posters covering its walls. As she sorts through the collection, she's wholly unprepared for the ramifications of the dark and deadly secrets she'll uncover.

A century earlier, Gossamer Grove has been stirred into chaos by the arrival of controversial and charismatic twin revivalists. The chaos takes a murderous turn when Libby Sheffield, working at her father's newspaper, receives an obituary for a reputable church deacon hours before his death. As she works with the deacon's son to unravel the mystery behind the crime, it becomes undeniably clear that a reckoning has come to town—but it isn't until another obituary arrives that they realize the true depths of the danger they've waded into.

Two women, separated by a hundred years, must uncover the secrets within the borders of their own town before it's too late and they lose their future—or their very souls.

For Love & Honor - An Uncertain Choice Book 3 - Jody Hedlund

Sunday, June 24, 2018

My Rating
 - You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you. (More Info)

About the Book

Lady Sabine is harboring a skin blemish, one, that if revealed, could cause her to be branded as a witch, put her life in danger, and damage her chances of making a good marriage. After all, what nobleman would want to marry a woman so flawed?

Sir Bennet is returning home to protect his family from an imminent attack by neighboring lords who seek repayment of debts. Without fortune or means to pay those debts, Sir Bennet realizes his only option is to make a marriage match with a wealthy noblewoman. As a man of honor, he loathes the idea of courting a woman for her money, but with time running out for his family’s safety, what other choice does he have?

As Lady Sabine and Sir Bennet are thrust together under dangerous circumstances, will they both be able to learn to trust each other enough to share their deepest secrets? Or will those secrets ultimately lead to their demise? (Goodreads)

My Thoughts

Daring swordfights, a hidden secret, bandits, treasure, true love...Oh yes, Jody Hedlund has delivered another winner of a medieval young adult story.

Lady Sabine has a harrowing journey of self-acceptance ahead of her. Sir Bennet has always strived to remain honorable...Will he be able to follow his heart and love?

I adore that one of my favorite authors has branched out and started a Young Adult series! My only complaint is that the story was too short. I would have loved to have a little more time with Sabine and Bennet...I love the world that Jody has created and the heroes, the knights, are so very swoony! I am excited to read the next book in the series, A Loyal Heart.

I received a complimentary copy of For Love and Honor from the publisher. I also borrowed the audio version from my library and purchased my own print copy. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

About the Author

Winner of the 2016 Christian Book Award and Christy Award, best-selling author Jody Hedlund writes inspirational historical romances for both youth and adults.

Jody lives in central Michigan with her husband, five busy children, and five spoiled cats. Although Jody prefers to experience daring and dangerous adventures through her characters rather than in real life, she’s learned that a calm existence is simply not meant to be (at least in this phase of her life!).

When she’s not penning another of her page-turning stories, she loves to spend her time reading, especially when it also involves consuming coffee and chocolate.

The Heart's Appeal - London Beginnings Book 2 - Jennifer Delamere

My Rating
★★★★★ - You have bewitched me, body and soul. (More Info)

About the Book
He Never Expected to See Her Again. Then She Appeared with a Most Unexpected Request...

Strong-minded and independent, Julia Bernay has come to London to study medicine and become a doctor--a profession that has only just opened up to women. When she witnesses a serious accident, her quick action saves the life of an ambitious young barrister named Michael Stephenson. It’s only later that she learns he could be instrumental in destroying her dreams for the future.

Coming from a family that long ago lost its status, Michael Stephenson has achieved what many would have thought impossible. Hard work and an aptitude for the law have enabled him to regain the path to wealth and recognition. His latest case puts him in the middle of a debate over the future of a women’s medical school. He’s supposed to remain objective, but when the beguiling and determined Julia reappears with an unexpected entreaty, he begins to question what he’s made most important in his life. As the two are tangled into spending more time together, will their diverging goals be too much to overcome? (From Author Website)

My Thoughts

I was absolutely swept into the theater life of the first book in this series, so there was no doubt that I would NEED to read Julia's story. A whole year of waiting was well worth it. Julia Bernay is stubborn, confident, and inspiring. In an age when a women's place was limited and stifled by the "rules" of society, Julia pushes the barriers wherever she goes. I love her character and admire the women who LIVED and DID what she dreamed to accomplish. A lady doctor...whoever heard of such a thing...Thankfully, um, EVERYONE!

Conflict, a good story NEEDS conflict...and The Heart's Appeal has just the RIGHT balance of it. A romance that seems impossible, conflict of interest in a professional sense, and a clashing of ideals at every corner. I LOVE IT!!! I was totally engrossed in the story and thought the portrayal of the era very well done.

I am so excited to read more of the Bernay sisters...and hopefully get that answer we are all longing for!!!

I received a complimentary copy of The Heart's Appeal from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

A Most Noble Heir - Susan Anne Mason

Wednesday, June 20, 2018

My Rating
 - You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you. (More Info)

About the Book
Will gaining the world cost him everything he holds most dear?

When stable hand Nolan Price learns from his dying mother that he is actually the son of the Earl of Stainsby, his plans for a future with kitchen maid Hannah Burnham are shattered. Once he is officially acknowledged as the earl's heir, Nolan will be forbidden to marry beneath his station.

Unwilling to give up the girl he loves, he devises a plan to elope--believing that once their marriage is sanctioned by God, Lord Stainsby will be forced to accept their union. However, as Nolan struggles to learn the ways of the aristocracy, he finds himself caught between his dreams for tomorrow and his father's demanding expectations.

Forces work to keep the couple apart at every turn, and a solution to remain together seems further and further away. With Nolan's new life pulling him irrevocably away from Hannah, it seems only a miracle will bring them back together. (Goodreads)

My Thoughts
Such a fun and unique story! Tensions are high as we begin this story and don't release until the end. I just had to know how it was all going to work out. Hannah has severe insecurities, and although relatable, a couple times I thought I was going to have to purse whomp her. Nolan...while sweet and charming, was a bit pig-headed on a couple of occasions. Watching Hannah and Nolan work through their insecurities and fears was real and heartbreaking. But I love, LOVE, how the author infuses the situation with GOD! It is truly amazing what can happen when we let HIM lead us, heal us, and strengthen us.

Set in the Victorian era, Susan Anne Mason brings to life the upstairs/downstairs aspects and the brilliance of them intertwining in an unexpected way. Conflicted between his heart and duty, will Nolan become the heir worthy of his father's praise and Hannah's heart? Can Hannah adjust to the changes in life now demanded of her?

Filled with surprises, excitements, devastations, and romance...This is a perfect book for reading on vacation this year! So grab your copy from the library or bookstore now.

I received a complimentary copy of A Most Noble Heir from the publishers. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
